The burial place of Saint Sava
Mileševa Monastery, the endowment of King Stefan Vladislav, was built in 1219. Its significance is immeasurable because in 1237 the relics of Saint Sava were brought here from Tarnovo in Bulgaria. For centuries it was a place of pilgrimage, until Sinan Pasha took the relics to Belgrade and burned them on Vračar in 1594.
The White Angel
The monastery gained worldwide fame thanks to the fresco “The White Angel” (the Angel at the Tomb of Christ). This fresco is considered one of the most beautiful works of European medieval art. Interestingly, this very image was sent into space as part of the “Voyager” message, representing the achievements of human civilisation.
