From the “Ujedinjenje” Tavern to a Hospital

The money for the construction of this hospital came from the sale of one of the most valuable plots in Belgrade – the site of the tavern “Ujedinjenje”, where the Ethnographic Museum and the Aero Club stand today. From that capital, Nikola and Evgenija earmarked funds for the care of poor merchants.

Construction at Zvečanska 9 began in 1937, and the hospital was solemnly opened and consecrated on 12 May 1940. It was the most modern institution of its time, with three departments – internal medicine, surgery and gynaecology – equipped with the most up-to-date medical apparatus.

Film History

Besides its medical purpose, this building also entered the history of Yugoslav cinema. It was in its corridors and rooms that Goran Marković’s cult film “Variola Vera” (1982) was shot, which faithfully evokes the atmosphere of a smallpox epidemic. Today it houses the Burns Clinic of the Clinical Centre of Serbia (KCS).
