The Home in Knjaževac

A house of hope in the Timok region

In its noble mission of helping those most in need, the Nikola Spasić Endowment built in Knjaževac in 1935 a facility with a dual purpose: a Home for Infirm Citizens and a Pupils' Shelter.

This endowment was a response to the difficult social situation in eastern Serbia between the two world wars. Nikola Spasić believed that society had a moral duty to care for those who could no longer work, but also to give poor children the chance to be educated.

A union of youth and old age

The concept of the home was unique – under the same roof found refuge elderly people without care and poor pupils from the surrounding villages who attended school in Knjaževac. This symbiosis of generations made the home a place of warmth and solidarity.
