A temple of health on Bulbulder

The construction of the City Hospital in Belgrade (today the Zvezdara University Clinical Centre) is the crowning achievement of the charitable work of the Nikola Spasić Endowment. Following the testamentary wish of its founder that “one great hospital for the poor be built”, the Endowment's Board completed the construction of this monumental building in 1935.

The hospital was built on what was then the outskirts of the city, on Zvezdara hill (the area known as Bulbulder), which ensured the clean air and quiet necessary for the recovery of patients. At the time of its opening it was one of the most modern health institutions in the Balkans, equipped with the most up-to-date medical apparatus of the age.

A salvation for thousands of people

The Endowment not only financed the construction of the building, but for years supported its work, procuring medicines and medical supplies. Above the main entrance the inscription still stands proudly: “Nikola Spasić Endowment”, an eternal reminder of the man who turned his capital into the health of his people.
