World heritage of the Serbian Middle Ages

The UNESCO World Heritage List includes several ensembles built by Serbian rulers and noblemen. Studenica is inscribed as a separate property, Đurđevi Stupovi (Saint George's Pillars) together with Sopoćani forms the property “Stari Ras and Sopoćani”, while Visoki Dečani and Gračanica belong to the property “Medieval Monuments in Kosovo”.

Hilandar is part of the property “Holy Mountain” (Athos). The inscriptions refer to monument ensembles, not to individual benefactors, but they all speak of the same tradition: a ruler builds an endowment as his eternal house and as a gift to the community.
